State capital Hartford, known worldwide as an insurance industry powerhouse, also has a policy of ensuring terrific shopping sprees. Among newer retail venues: Adriaen’s Landing, anchored along the Connecticut River by the Hartford Civic Center and Connecticut Expo Center, with a 30-acre shopping/entertainment complex beside Front Street. The name salutes Dutch mariner Adriaen Block, in 1614 becoming the Connecticut River Valley region’s first European explorer. Regional malls in Connecticut include Danbury’s Danbury Fair with Macy’s, Filene’s and Lord & Taylor; Enfield’s Westfield Shoppingtown with Filene’s, Target, and Sears; and Westfarms Mall, straddling West Hartford and Farmington, featuring Filene’s, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor. Stamford’s six-level enclosed Town Center is anchored by Macy’s, Filene’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Waterbury’s Brass Mill Center and Commons has Filene’s and Sears. The Brickyard in Belin has Home Depot and Sam’s Club, and Bloomfield’s Capaco Shopping Center is anchored by Ames and Stop & Shop. Canton’s Shoppes at Farmington Valley includes Talbot, Barnes and Noble, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Shaw’s. Orange’s Orange Promenade has Burlington Coast Factory, Service Merchandise and L.A. Fitness, and Willimantic’s East Brook Mall, has Kohl’s and T.J. Max. Westbrook’s Tanger Outlet Center has more than 65 name brand outlets. Clinton Crossing Factory Outlets boasts stores from Aeropostale and Anne Klein to Van Heusen and Zales. Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum, Mark Twain House, Harriet Beecher Stowe House, State Capital, and Old State House have museum gift shops.
